Installation of Biomass Boiler System to CAFRE

Client: CAFRE Enniskillen
Works: M&E Refurbishment
Main Contractor: H&J Martin
CHC Group Ltd was appointed by H&J Martin in 2010 to undertake the mechanical upgrade works at College of Agriculture, Food and Enterprise in Enniskillen.  Works included the safe removal and disposal of existing boiler plant, pumps and controls and replacement with new systems.

The replacement plant included:
·         1 No 300kw Biomass wood chip / pellet boiler
·         1 No 300kw Oil Fired Boiler

The biomass system included a pellet store, buffer vessel and control system.  All associated pumps, valves and controls were also installed on both units.

Replacement boiler plant had to be capable of communicating with the existing BEMS System within the CAFRE Campus and set for efficient temperature control, which required a rigorous commissioning and testing programme.

Although works were programmed outside of term time, the building was occupied with teaching and administration staff, therefore building services has to be maintained during works and changeovers programmed for weekend.

The installation of a biomass boiler resulted in a 95% reduction in oil required to heat the main building at CAFRE.  This renewable energy source contributes very significantly to CAFRE’s commitment to reduce its usage of fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions.

In addition to a significant saving of approximately 35% in fuel costs, the biomass boiler has resulted in carbon saving of almost 200 tonnes each year.
